The TRUMP token leads Solana's meme coin surge but Reuters just exposed who is actually winning

A Reuters investigation published in June 2026 found the Trump family made at least $2.3 billion from four crypto ventures while retail investors on the other side of those trades lost roughly the same amount, and the TRUMP meme coin was a central piece of that story.
Solana's meme coin market has had a wild first half of 2026. The category's total market cap climbed from roughly $5.1 billion at the start of the year toward $6.7 billion by early July, according to data tracked in the brief, with daily trading volume surging past $2.57 billion. Official Trump, the TRUMP token launched on Solana in January 2025, holds a fully diluted valuation of approximately $1.75 billion as of July 3, making it the single largest meme coin on the chain. That number looks impressive. It also needs context.
The Reuters investigation, published June 9, is worth reading carefully if you're putting real money into any of this. Reporters combed through thousands of pages of corporate filings and interviewed more than a dozen academics plus 27 retail investors. Their conclusion: the Trump family licensed the family name, promoted the ventures via social media and public appearances, and collected revenue as buyers piled in, without meaningful personal capital at risk. From the TRUMP memecoin alone, blockchain data analyzed by Reuters points to roughly $1.2 billion in total token-related revenue, with the family receiving an estimated $616 million of that. Eight government ethics experts told Reuters this is a conflict of interest unlike anything seen in modern American history, given that Trump's administration directly regulates the crypto industry generating those returns.
None of that makes the TRUMP token untradeable. It does mean you should understand what you're actually buying. The token's price sits around $1.71 today, per CoinMarketCap data, down more than 95% from its January 2025 all-time high near $75. The circulating market cap is closer to $400 million. The $1.75 billion headline figure reflects fully diluted valuation, which counts the entire one-billion token supply at current prices, most of which is not in open circulation. That gap between FDV and circulating cap matters, and any analyst who doesn't flag it is doing you a disservice.
Where the next wave is forming
Analysts tracking the Solana meme coin space are pointing to something structurally different in this cycle's new entrants. The animal-themed wave that drove tokens like BONK and Dogwifhat in 2024 and early 2025 has largely run its course. What's replacing it, according to observers, is a cluster of AI-generated and synthetic-culture themed projects, tokens built around algorithmically created personas, fictional AI characters, or concepts that don't map to any single cultural moment or political figure. The appeal is that no one person owns the narrative, which removes the rug-pull risk that's burned buyers of celebrity and politician tokens repeatedly.
That shift matters for anyone building a position in this category. Solana's transaction speeds and near-zero fees remain genuine structural advantages over Ethereum for high-frequency meme coin trading, and the ecosystem isn't going anywhere. But the tokens that survive longer than a news cycle tend to be the ones where no single wallet holds 80% of supply and no single tweet by a public figure determines your exit price.
The TRUMP token's dominance in market cap terms is real, but it's also downstream of something specific: political attention and the Reuters investigation that followed it have kept search volume and trading activity elevated in a way that is hard to sustain independent of the political calendar. If you're long TRUMP, you're really long the next news cycle out of Washington. That's a trade. Know what it is before you make it.
